Appalachian Ohio provides the perfect balance between investment and access to critical resources. With that in mind, OBDC recently launched its Enterprise Appalachia microsite, aimed at providing site selectors with important, strategic information about the region's assets.
Inc. Magazine is authoring four white papers on the ideal location selection criteria for entrepreneurs. This first white paper covers the topic of finding funding and is available from the home page of the Enterprise Appalachaia site. The next white papers will cover access to knowledge and labor, access to a supply chain, and access to the market.
One recent success story from the Ohio Appalachian region is Athens-based Sunpower. The company could soon could see its super-efficient engine technology blast into the heavens though a partnership with NASA. The company's work with NASA has also fueled expansion. Sunpower has grown 32 percent in the last two years, and now employs 71. Many of the employees are engineers and technicians, many who have been recruited from Ohio University and nearby Hocking College respectively.

Balance for Cara may sound more like work, but when she describes her mission to improve education in Appalachian Ohio, there’s a passionate sparkle in her eye. Her work is clearly a labor of love. In her role as the president and CEO of the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, she devotes much of her time to initiatives like the ICAN! campaign, which promotes education through community investment.
For Cara, achieving balance means bringing people, passion and purpose together. “Family, creative outlets, personal spiritual beliefs and work all come together in ways that enhance each other and strengthen the whole experience of life in Ohio.”

In addition to the State of Ohio being recognized as the top location for company expansion for an unprecedented four years, many Ohio regions also were honored by Site Selection Magazine through the publications 2009 Governor's Cup Award. The State was noted for having several cities ranked in the top 10 metropolitan and micropolitan categories for new and expanded corporate facilities, proving the business strength of Ohio's five distinct regions and urban areas. The featured regions were:
- Cincinnati/Middletown ranked 6th respectively among metropolitan areas with populations of over one million.
- Dayton swept the top spots again for the second year in a row in mid-sized metropolitan areas with a population between 200,000 and one million.
- Wooster, Ashtabula and Findlay ranked 2nd, 6th, and 10th respectively among micropolitan cities of 10,000 to 50,000 in population.

Ohio is leading the way to energy independence.
