Columbus Arts Scene Makes National Impact

Central Ohio artists and arts organizations are recognized regionally, nationally and internationally for their achievements. Here are some of the latest headlines: Vázquez Receives Scholarship for European MasterclassCentral Ohio musician Rodolfo Vázquez received the Marc Rich Flute Scholarship to attend Sir James Galway's International Flute Masterclass 2008 in Weggis, Switzerland. The Masterclass is an annual event that offers flute professionals, students and enthusiasts the chance to study with the master for a week. COSI Named #1 Science Center for FamiliesColumbus’ own Center of Science and Industry (COSI) was named the #1 Science Center in the country for families according to Parents magazine. “COSI has worked very hard to make a more significant impact on early childhood education and become a more valuable community resource for families,” said COSI President & CEO David Chesebrough. “The fact that COSI was chosen as an early childhood education leader from among the best science centers in the country means our efforts are paying off.” Barbara Nicholson to Change Roles at King Arts ComplexAfter 16 years leading the King Arts Complex, Barbara Nicholson will shift to a part-time advisory role. "I want to be actively a part of the complex," said Nicholson, who has led the institution since 1992. "I'm not retiring or resigning, simply changing roles." Board President Larry James said a national search would be launched in September for a new executive director, who is expected to take over by spring. Local Artists Release Book about Somali DiasporaPhotographer Abdi Roble, a GCAC 2006 Individual Artist Fellowship recipient, and Doug Rutledge will release a book titled The Somali Diaspora: A Journey Away in September. In the book, Rutledge and Roble, who immigrated to the U.S. from Somalia in 1989, trace the journey of a family from the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya, home to more than 150,000 Somalis, to new lives in the United States. A book signing will take place at the Columbus Museum of Art (CMA) on Sat., Sep. 13. GCAC funded an exhibition at the CMA last fall featuring images used in the book. GCAC also funded Roble and Rutledge’s trip to Germany last year to document the Somali Diaspora there. The two are now looking for follow-up funding to go back and trace the European refugee routes. Artists-in-Schools Artists Make a Splash NationallyArtists-in-Schools artist Kevin Cordi has been appointed as the first ever "Storyteller-in-Residence" for an academic year at The Ohio State University. Cordi will work on building programs at the university, public schools and community organizations that bridge understanding with storytelling. Another AiS artist, Hank Finken, recently portrayed Thomas Edison in the film made for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Museum in Washington, D.C. The film was released in August, and will serve as an exhibition film that will greet visitors to the museum. Finken presents a program on Thomas Edison with the AiS program.
